"Space science research institutions have traditionally been populated by a strong male workforce, but the structure is rapidly changing."
-Cynthia O'Carroll, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center

Sally Ride's Legacy

Since Ride's flight, 55 women have now become astronauts and many of these women have been to space multiple times. As of 1999, women made up about 25% of astronauts. In 1983, 23.7% of NASA's workforce were women, but by 2009, 35% of NASA's workforce were women. Eight years after Sally Ride's flight, the number of women awarded doctorate degrees in science and engineering more than tripled.
