The magazine pictured to the left states,"The arrival of women astronaut candidates, at the Johnson Space Center in Houston liberated the most exclusive men's club in America; no area of national life had been so totally male as the space program." Ride proved through her mission that women were just as capable as men in space.

Sally Ride is a role model to women all over the world. A 1984 poll of 435 college-educated women Ride was voted second best role model for young women.
